Marul neekiyaar, the original name of Thirunavukkarasar, in the early
periods of his life got illusioned by the Jain principles and became a Jain
follower with the name Devaseynar. His elder sister Thilakavathiyar was quite
worried about this and was praying to Lord Shiva for her brothers return to
Saiva tradition. God gave him Soolai disease ( heavy pain in stomach). The
Jain spiritual leaders were not able to cure it. Finally he returned to his
sister, who gave him the Holy Ash and asked him to pray the Lord of
Thiruvadhikai. He sang this hymn and the God gave him relief from his pain
and since he impressed the Lord with his hymns the Lord gave him the name
"Thirunaavukkarasu" meaning the king of the tongue.

Translation:
Do not treat me like the Deva of death. I did a lot of misdeeds due
to my ignorance. Oh the God on the Holy Bull, I will pray your feet in the
day and in the night, always. The pain in my stomach is unbearable. Oh God of
the Veerattaanam* of Adhikai kedilam.
*Veerattaanam - The eight Holy places where Lord Shiva destroyed the evil
forces. In Thiruvadhikai He destroyed the Thripura.
The Jain leaders did not like the return of Thirunaavukkarasar to
Saivism. They asked the Jain king of the country (Maheendhra Pallavan) to
punish Thirunaavukkarasar. The king ordered to bring Thirunaavukkarasar to
the court. But Thirunaanukkarasar dwelving in the Glory of Lord Shiva refused
to obey his order saying that he is the slave of the Almighty and not to
anybody else.

Translation:
We are not constrained by the rule of any king. We wont fear for
death. We wont suffer in the Hell. We do not know illness. We wont bow to
anybody else. Everyday is blissful and no sufferings. The Lord Shankara, who
is not responsible to anybody else, is wearing the ring of sea shell in one
ear. To that rich man we became the unrelievable slaves and have taken
shelter in his beautiful reddish feet full of flowers.
The king ordered to tramp Thirunaavukkarasar by the Royal elephant.
Thirunaavukkarasar with heart filled with devotion for the God, who doesn't
bear the sadness of His devotees, sat down and sang this song. The elephant
instead of tramping on him saluted him with its trunk.

Translation:
The white Holy Ash, a head ornament - the Moon, the skin of tiger as
dress, the color of ruby, the Holy Bull, lot of snakes, One who possesses
these things, to that God we are servants. SO we are not afraid of anything.
There is nothing that can frighten us.
The king then put Thirunaavukkarasar in the lime kiln. He was put
there for many days. By the grace of God nothing happened to
Thirunaavukkarasar and he came out of the kiln all afresh. At that time he
sang this hymn.

Translation:
The shelter under the parallel feet of the God, my boss, is like the
nice melody of Veena (Musical Instrument), the early evening moon, pleasant
breeze, the Spring, a pond where bees are in making sound.
Finally the king decided to throw Thirunaanukkarasar into the sea
tieing him to a big stone. He was taken in a boat to the deeper portion of
the sea with the body tied to a stone. He was thrown in the sea. He was
unruffled. That time he recited with great love and confidence on Lord Shiva
this hymn. To the surprise of all others the stone became the boat and
Thirunaavukkarasar got down in a village near Thiruppadhiripuliyoor
(Kadaloor).

Translation:
The reciter of the Vedas, the flame like God, if we pray with folded
hands to his gold like glittering feet, even if we were tied to a big stone
and thrown in the sea there is a savior - that is the NAMASHIVAYA. ( The Holy
five letter)
Thirunaavukkarasar wanted the bad statement that he once went to
Jainism to be suppressed by identifying him as a Shivanadiyaar (Devotee). For
that he wanted the holy symbols of the Lord, namely the Holy Bull and
Thrisuula, to be marked on his body. For that he sang this song to the Lord
of Thiruth thuungaanai maadam. Immediately Siva ganas came and put those
marks on his shoulders and disappeared.

Translation:
To the Golden Foot there is a request. If there is an intention to
protect my praising soul, driving away the bad statement, the thunder like
three leaved spear be put on me. Oh! budding flame of thuungaanai maadam at
kadandhai.
Thirunaavukkarasar wanted to see the abode of the Lord, The Kailaash.
Seeing his determination God asked him to get into a pond in Himaalaya and he
got out in Thiruvaiyaaru. There the God showed the "Kailaashak kaakshi". At
that great moment he sang this hymn.

praising in time carrying water, those who enter, I enter following them.
Without even the footstep, while reaching aiyaaru saw with the loving female
elephant the male elephant. Saw His holy feet ! Saw the unseen !!
Thirunaavukkarasar served the Lord always remembering Him day and
night. The sage who was beyond the desires of wealth and other material
pleasures wanted to be in the holy feet of the God permanently. By His grace
he got the place under His comforting feet singing this nice hymn.
